Q & A: Why this title?
Friends and readers ask me about the title: where is it from and what does it represent? The title refers to place; in this case, the novel’s setting and the location for the main action — Patagonia, the extreme south of Argentina and Chile. It is a variation on the title of a memoir, The Uttermost Part of the Earth, by E. Lucas Bridges, published in 1950 by E.P, Dutton and Company. (The Uttermost Part of the Earth has been reissued in 2008 and is available on amazon.com). Lucas Bridges’ title was inspired by a biblical verse — “And ye shall be witness unto me both in Jeruselam … and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1, verse 8). Lucas Bridges was born in 1874, the son of an English missionary who settled on Tierra del Fuego at Ushuaia, the southernmost tip of South America. The family later homesteaded west of Ushuaia at Estancia Harberton on the Beagle Channel. The memoir tells the family’s story and is a combination of adventure, interaction with the natives, and frontier history. I recommend it to readers.
